چکیده

We report the discovery of Faraday rotation toward radio source 3C 84, the active galactic nucleus in NGC1275 at the core of the Perseus Cluster. The rotation measure (RM), determined from polarization observations at wavelengths of 1.3 and 0.9 mm, is (8.7± 2.3)×10 rad m−2, among the largest ever measured. The RM remained relatively constant over a 2 year period even as the intrinsic polarization position angle wrapped through a span of 300 degrees. The Faraday rotation is likely to originate either in the boundary layer of the radio jet from the nucleus, or in the accretion flow onto the central black hole. The accretion flow probably is disk-like rather than spherical on scales of less than a parsec, otherwise the RM would be even larger. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — polarization — galaxies: active — galaxies: jets — galaxies: individual(3C 84)

The rotation measure (RM), determined from polarization observations at wavelengths of 1.3 and 0.9 mm, is (8.7 ± 2.3)×105 rad m−2, among the largest ever measured. The RM remained relatively constant over a 2 yr period even as the intrinsic polarizat...

Probing the Magnetic Field at Sub-parsec Radii in the Accretion Disk of Ngc 4258

We present an analysis of polarimetric observations at 22 GHz of the water vapor masers in NGC 4258 obtained with the VLA and the GBT. We do not detect any circular polarization in the spectrum indicative of Zeeman-induced splitting of the maser lines of water, a non-paramagnetic molecule. We have improved the 1-σ upper limit estimate on the toroidal component of the magnetic field in the circu...

Detection and Measurement of Parsec-Scale Circular Polarization in Four AGN

We present five epochs of 15 GHz VLBA observations of 13 AGN. These observations were specially calibrated to detect parsec-scale circular polarization and our calibration techniques are discussed and analyzed in detail. We obtained reliable detections of parsec-scale circular polarization in the radio jets of four AGN: 3C 84, PKS 0528+134, 3C 273, and 3C 279. For each of these objects our dete...

A supermassive binary black hole in the quasar 3 C 345

Radio loud active galactic nuclei present a remarkable variety of signs indicating the presence of periodical processes possibly originating in binary systems of supermassive black holes, in which orbital motion and precession are ultimately responsible for the observed broad-band emission variations, as well as for the morphological and kinematic properties of the radio emission on parsec scal...

Long Baseline Polarimetry of 3 C 273 and 3 C 279 with the Coordinated Millimeter VLBI Array

86 GHz Very Long Baseline Polarimetry probes magnetic field structures within the cores of Active Galactic Nuclei at higher angular resolutions and a spectral octave higher than previously achievable. Observations of 3C 273 and 3C 279 taken in April 2000 with the Coordinated Millimeter VLBI Array have resulted in the first total intensity (Stokes I) and linear polarization VLBI images reported ...
